A Moving Guide by Flexi Removals

by flexi Comments: 0

We all know that moving house can be a stressful experience. It’s important to be as organised as possible, but in all the chaos, that’s easier said than done! To help you, we at Flexi Removals have put our heads together to come up with a guide to help you when moving house.

  1. The first thing you’ll need to know is who to tell that you’re moving. As tedious as this sounds, it’s very important. The most important are banks, insurance companies, credit and store cards and loan providers. It’s also important to remember to reroute your mail.
  2. Moving house is the perfect time to have a fresh start and dispose of some of that clutter. This will also reduce the price of your removal as the removal will have less to move! Start well in advance to give you time to decide what you want to take with you. Your local council will have facilities to dispose of your unwanted items.
  3. Separate your important documents such as essential paperwork, passports and birth certificates. Keep them in a box of their own for easy access.
  4. Give yourself plenty of time to pack the house. You can take a look at our Packing up a House blog for handy tips and tricks that could save you time and money. Here at Flexi Removals, we offer a packing service and packing materials so you can focus on other jobs.
  5. If you decide to pack the items yourself, be sure to label each box. This will help you when unpacking but also it will tell the removal team where to put each box. Label each box as fragile that needs to be handled with care.
  6. If you are going to dismantle furniture, ensure it is done before the removal. Use resealable bags to put bolts and screws in. Keep all the bolts for one item in one bag and label them so you know which piece of furniture they’re for.
  7. We always recommend having a survey of your house for the removal. Flexi Removals will always send a porter to your property well in advance of the removal to fill out a survey sheet, look at items that may need dismantling and check the access and exit points of the house. This helps Flexi Removals to come up with a flawless plan to ensure your removal goes smoothly.
  8. Some companies will charge extra for the insurance of your items while in transit. Flexi Removals are fully insured to move your items and will not charge any extra for insurance.
  9. Lastly, have a check of all the rooms in your house. It’s surprising how often small items are left behind.

How To Safely Move Antiques

by flexi Comments: 0

As a removal company in Preston, antiques and valuable items are something we are asked about regularly. Although ensuring all your items are packed and prepared properly is important, antiques and valuables are something that you might need to spend some extra time and attention on. Whether the items have been in your family for generations or you have recently purchased them, they are usually irreplaceable. So, have a read through these tips and tricks before moving and we’re sure you’ll find something useful! Additionally, if you would like to learn more about Flexi Removals, click the link.

Before The Move

We always recommend not applying waxes or oils to wooden furniture before the move, especially if you are putting the items into a storage unit. Applying waxes and oils can soften the finish and leave the surface more vulnerable to  damage from furniture pads. Instead, wait until after the move to treat your furniture. If you are looking for a dry and secure storage facility, take a look at the storage section of our website.

Moving Day

It goes without saying, different types of items are vulnerable in different areas, therefore,  different items need different types of packaging and techniques to transport them safely.

Antique Furniture

Antique furniture can be tricky to move safely sometimes and one small bump can be very costly! The tricky part of these items is usually the size and the awkward shape. Maneuvering a large sofa for example can be hard to navigate around corners and down corridors. Firstly, plan a route, and when it comes to moving the item, do not lift it with any vulnerable spots such as legs and arms. Instead, pick the item up by the base. This way you will have move control as well as not being at risk of snapping a leg off! Also, it helps to have at least 3 people helping. Two (or more) people carrying and one who can clearly see the path without obscured vision who can guide the other removal men.

Antique Paintings and Mirrors

Paintings and mirrors are particularly fragile. They are vulnerable to knocks, bumps and even accidental drops, but one thing a lot of people overlook is added pressure. If packed into a van for example, things settle and move as the van goes round corners and over bumps in the road. This can cause the items in the back to shift around until they fill spaces and settle into a position. The last thing you want is the weight of an items pressing into something as fragile as glass!

Wrap paintings and mirrors in layers of bubble wrap and protective sheets, especially corners as these tend the be the sections most vulnerable to bumps and chips.

Fragile Antique Items

Whether it’s glass jugs or delicate china, these items are particularly vulnerable when being transported and require some careful thought and planning. Each item should be individually wrapped in bubble wrap or sheets then neatly and carefully packed into boxes. Pack the top of the box with bubble wrap or sheets for a bit of added protection and to fill any space left over at the top of the box. We always suggest labeling these boxes to ensure nobody stacks boxes or other items on top of them and it also reminds people to handle them with care.

Use a Professional Removal Company

We would always suggest using a professional removal company for moving the kind of items listed above. They most likely know more than you and have experience moving antiques, not to mention they will be fully insured. They will have the correct equipment to protect items and hold them in place, plus the tools and know how to dismantle and reassemble any items that may need it.

The last piece of advice we have for you is, don’t be afraid to ask for advice. With items and delicate and valuable as these you can’t prepare too much. Phone a few different removal companies or specialists for advice and see what they say.

Here at Flexi Removals, we are antique movers and specialists and move these kinds of items all the time. Take a look at our White Glove Service and our Packing pages for more information about the services we offer. If you are looking for an antique furniture removal company, contact Flexi Removals and one of our members of staff will be happy to help.

Looking to Store?

by flexi Comments: 0

There are many different types of storage and finding the right facility isn’t always easy. So we’ve put together some key aspects to think about and a few tips and tricks to help you along the way!

What kind of items are you storing? – The type of items you want to put into storage will determine the type of storage you’re going to need. For example putting items such as sofas and mattresses into an outdoor metal container is not a good idea. Metal containers are susceptible to condensation which means your items are more likely to get wet. So unless you’re going to regularly air out your rented container you’re much better off with an indoor room.

Metal containers are good for items such as tools or vehicles because they’re easy to access and very hard for a criminal to break into. They can usually be driven up to, this makes it easy to load in and out.

How long do you need to store your items? – A trick that some storage facilities will use is they will offer cheap storage for the first month and then up the price dramatically. Whereas some will give you a price that will never change no matter how long you store with them. It goes without saying that if you’re planning on storing for more than a couple of months it would usually be more beneficial to store with the facility whose price will not increase.

Do you need access to your items? – There are facilities that offer access to your items as much as you want, 24/7. Other facilities are more limited. If you do not need access however, there are storage facilities that put your items into wooden crates and stack them up with other people items using a forklift. This type of storage is usually done by a removal company. They transport your items, store it and then transport them back out after the agreed time.  If you do choose this method of storage, it is worth noting that they may make it very expensive for another outside removal company to retrieve your items meaning you have to use them. If you need something that is in storage, it can be very expensive to get access to that particular item. Always check the costs before letting them store your items.

Security – Security of a storage facility is something you should ask about. We would always recommend a facility with CCTV and an alarm. There are also some facilities that individually alarm each room as an extra precaution. When inquiring about storage it’s always a good idea to ask the member of staff about the security of building and ask if its monitored regularly. Most storage sites should be monitored 24/7.

Ask Questions – Ask questions. Make sure the member of staff knows the information provided in this blog. It should not take much prompting for them to tell you the information provided here. They should be able to advise you on the type of storage you need for the items you have. It is important you choose the correct facility so don’t hesitate the ask as many questions as you need to feel that you have made the right decision.

Location, Location Location… – It goes without saying that you should choose a storage facility that is easily accessible, with parking. You may be able to find a facility that is cheaper but if it is miles away from your house or extremely difficult to get to during certain times, then it might be worth considering other options.

In the local area, we recommend The Storage Works and The Self Storage Warehouse. “The Self Storage Warehouse” caters for storage units in Preston and The Storage Works has storage units in Blackburn.

Packing Up A House

by flexi Comments: 0

We at Flexi Removals receive a number of questions about tips on packing up a house before a big move.  So here are some tips to make the move easier and less stressful.

Organization is key – It is unlikely once you have moved house that you will be able to unpack everything in a single day. So organize your more important items into boxes, and label them up with a contents list or a simpler method is to simply star the essential boxes. That way when you decide you need a cup of tea after everything is inside, you know exactly where the kettle is!

Labeling boxes – When moving a full house that has been packed into numerous boxes, things can become more complicated than you may initially think. When moving boxes into your new house, it is handy to know which room the contents of each box belongs to without opening up each box to find out what is inside! Labeling up each box with a simple contents list and room it belongs in will save a lot of time and energy in the later stages of the move.

Pack according to weight – This one might seem obviously but it is definitely worth mentioning. Pack heavier items together and stack them at the bottom, with the lighter boxes and items on top.

Protecting fragile items – Take the extra time needed to protect your more delicate items. Use towels or bed sheets to help protect mirrors, dishes etc. We recommend wrapping plates and dishes separately and also stacking plates on their side vertically rather than on top of each other to save that bottom plate from breaking.

Does all this sound like too much effort or you simply don’t have the time, a lot of movers will offer to do the task for you, such as the packing service offered by Flexi Removals Preston.
